Always a little extra special when the sun’s rays look like they’re shining right onto you

Erica, our fearless paddle & meditate leader loving life and sneaking in a quick selfie (no paddlers fell in the water during this time)!

Sitting down on your paddle board is also a perfectly acceptable way to enjoy the bay and the sunset

Sometimes, you get lucky and get a solo class, like Lucy did this evening!

Best quote of this night, “It doesn’t even feel like I’m in New Jersey and I worked today!” We love making locals forget about their busy lives and remember how amazing our beautiful state really is!

The good part about falling in while close to houses…we can use their docks to get back on the boards. Sometimes we topple. But then we get right back on the board!

Models or paddleboarders? hmm, you decide!

Frequently Asked Questions:

  1. What’s included in this event? A 45-60 minute paddleboarding session around the back bay, a 30 minute meditation and 5+ minutes of Reiki on the floating dock at the 10th Street Wharf in Ocean City, New Jersey. Sunset Paddle and Meditate includes a paddle board rental, a paddle, a life vest, and a yoga mat for the meditation.

  2. What should I bring? Water, a towel, and a long sleeve shirt or hoodie (it gets pretty chilly some evenings). If desired, you can bring sunscreen, a hat (that won’t fly off with the wind), sunglasses (with something to attach them to your head so you don’t lose them in the bay), and bug spray (we don’t usually have bugs unless it is a West wind).

  3. What should I wear? You can wear whatever you feel comfortable in. Some people wear bathing suits, others wear shorts and shirts, some wear pants or hoodies. Just remember that if you fall in, you’ll get pretty wet so you might want to pack a change of clothes if you don’t wear a bathing suit. You do not need shoes for this event (you will leave your shoes either in your car or on the dock).

  4. Can I bring my phone? Yes, at your own risk. Phones can fall into the bay and never be seen again, so its important to have a floating protective phone case or a wearable protective phone case like this one to keep your phone safe. We will take pictures of you for this event so if you want to play it safe and keep your phone tucked away but still have some memories of this event, we’ve got you covered.

  5. How can I get pictures of the event? We’ll take photos that evening and we can either airdrop them to you or send the via text message at the end of the night. You don’t need to bring your phone for photos if you’re worried about dropping it in the water. If you want extra pictures taken or a certain scene, just let us know!

  6. What if I never paddle boarded before? No worries! This event includes a paddleboarding lesson so you know what you are doing when we get out on the water. Erica is a paddle board instructor (she wears many hats)! and will keep you safe on the water.

  7. Is Paddleboarding hard? Surprisingly, no! Paddleboarding looks a lot harder than it actually is. While you will have to balance yourself on the board, it is a very large board (11 to 12 feet for beginners)! This gives you plenty of space to stay afloat and a lot of coverage area in the water. You’ll stand (usually, as some people do stay seated the whole time) and use a single paddle to propel yourself through the water. Paddleboarding is a great sport to work on balance and upper body strength from paddling. It also helps work your core!

  8. What if I’m not strong? You don’t need to be strong for this event. We take a relaxing paddle around the back bay, where the water is pretty calm. We go slowly enough to keep a conversation going. It is meant to be an enjoyable evening on the water.

  9. What if I have terrible balance? Please still join us! You can stay on your knees or even sit on the board for the paddleboarding part. And when you feel ready, you can try to stand. We teach a special way of standing (Willie, the owner of Ocean City Paddle Company, calls it “Dog, Frog, Human”). It helps you stand with ease and get your feet planted on the right spot on your board.

  10. Is paddleboarding safe?Yes! All participants must wear a life vest (we provide these) and will have their board tied to their ankle so it can’t get too far away from you if you fall off.

  11. What if I fall off? It is pretty rare for people to fall off their boards, but it does happen. If you do fall off, fortunately, you’ll float since you’ll be wearing a life vest. You’ll also be attached to your board by your board leash, so we will help you get close to your board and get back on.

  12. How many people can sign up per event? We keep the sign ups limited to five people per event to keep the group small. If you have more than five people and you want to book a private event, we can set that up for you and have extra instructors on hand to assist with the paddleboarding portion. Contact Ocean City Paddle Company at (609) 938-0117 or Soul Dreams Studio at (609) 442-4266 to inquire about private bookings.

  13. What if I want to book a private session? We can accommodate a private booking for you for an individual or a group! Contact Ocean City Paddle Company at (609) 938-0117 or Soul Dreams Studio at (609) 442-4266 to inquire about private bookings.

  14. What if I never meditated before? Please still join us! Following paddleboarding, we will sit on the floating dock to enjoy the sights and sounds of the back bay. You’ll be guided into a meditation and then given some time to be still and relax. Even if you don’t have a meditation practice yet, you can still enjoy the relaxing time on the dock, either laying with your eyes closed or sitting up watching the birds and other wildlife, the sunset, and the water.

  15. What kind of meditation do we do? You’ll be guided into a progressive relaxation meditation that helps you feel connected to your body and relax your muscles and quiet your mind.

  16. How is Reiki incorporated into this event? You’ll be given the option to experience a few minutes of Reiki while in meditation or relaxation on the dock. This is completely optional.

  17. What is Reiki? Reiki is a Japanese healing technique that helps with stress reduction and relaxation. For this event, I’ll gently place my hands on you (usually on your head, shoulders, or upper back). If you’d rather not be physically touched, Reiki can also be given by gently hovering my hands just a few inches above your body. Either way (touch or no touch) the energetic results are the same!

  18. What if I want to participate but I don’t want Reiki? Please still join us! You can relax during the meditation time and do not need to receive any Reiki if you don’t want to. It is totally optional.

  19. How long have you been doing this? This is our sixth summer hosting Sunset Paddle and Meditate evenings. We’ve been so grateful to have had so many wonderful participants over the years. Some had never tried paddleboarding before and enjoyed it so much that they actually bought their own board and made paddleboarding a regular part of their lives!

  20. Can I bring my own board? You’re welcome to bring your own paddle board, but the event includes a paddle board rental so you don’t need to bring your own board unless you really want to! *Update: there is now an option for a lower priced ticket if you bring your own board.

  21. Can I bring my own life vest? You can wear your own life vest as long as it is United States Coast Guard approved for the bay.

  22. Can I bring my own paddle? Sure thing! Our paddles are the standard rental paddles, so if you have a paddle you really love, please feel free to bring it.
