The best yoga views

1. What if I never practiced yoga before?

We have welcomed lots of beginners and first time yogis on the beach here in Ocean City! It is always a pleasure to teach someone’s very first yoga class. We LOVE it! So even if you’ve never done yoga, or you aren’t flexible, or strong, or have good balance, we still want to see you on the beach! All of these things come from doing physical activity, like yoga. And the very best benefits are in the mind. Welcoming the morning with the warm sun, the sand beneath your feet, the salt air and the sound of the ocean waves is an experience you’ll remember forever!

Classes in the sand

2. What is better to bring, a yoga mat or a beach towel?

If it’s possible, we recommend a heavier yoga mat (not the lightweight ones they sell) that can become a permanent beach yoga mat. Once sand is on a mat, it is pretty hard to get it off. This is especially true of the tiny sand we have here in NJ! Of course, you can also use a beach towel - most students do - or a large beach blanket. Another option is to place a large beach towel or blanket underneath your yoga mat to help reduce sand getting on it. But if you are a beach goer, you know the deal…sand manages to get everywhere!

Yoga time

3. How early should I arrive?

We suggest arriving 10-15 minutes early so you can check in, pay, and set yourself up in your desired spot on the sand.

4. Do I need a beach tag?

If you are only joining us for class and not staying on the beach afterwards, a beach tag is not needed!

5. Will there be parking?

Yes! Use this address: 3636 Wesley Ave, Ocean City, NJ to bring you to the proper street. There is parking on 37th street, as well as the surrounding streets, for free. The spots are first come first serve, so be sure to arrive a little earlier for busy times: Memorial & Labor Days & Weekends, July 4th and July 4th weekend. Sometimes on those busier times students find parking closer to West Ave & walk the few blocks down.

6. Can I ride my bike?

You sure can! There is a bike rack at the beach entrance to park and/or lock your bike.

7. Can I wear shoes?

You don’t need to wear shoes for beach yoga unless it will be better for you for balance or help you feel more comfortable! Shoes are your choice!

8. Are there bathrooms nearby?

The closest bathrooms are on 34th street and are open to the public. They should be open both before and after class starts.

9. Are there bugs or flies?

Occasionally we will see ladybugs :) Also, if there is a WEST wind, there’s a good chance of some not so friendly black flies. All other wind directions tend to be bug-free, so if you are a hard no on being around flies, check the wind direction in the morning! You can also use bug spray or peppermint essential oil to keep them away. L.E.H. Soap Company makes a good natural bug repellent that works well!

10. Do I need sunscreen that early in the morning?

Yep! Especially if you are fair skinned. While the UV index is technically lower than it would be in the middle of the day, we do recommend sunscreen, or thin layers of SPF clothing, especially if you are sensitive to the sun.

11. How should I dress?

Comfortably! And, in clothes you can move around in. Also, layers are a good idea! Sometimes, you can leave your house and it feels really warm, but the air on the beach is really chilly. And sometimes, it’s the other way around.

Plenty of room for everyone on the beach!

12. How many people usually attend class?

That varies widely! Some mornings there may only be 1-4 students while other mornings there may be 20+ The number of students varies due to the weather, the day of the week, how many people decided to get out of bed that morning…etc. etc. Please know that we are happy to teach to even just one student, so if you happen to show up and get a private class, please consider yourself lucky and enjoy it! We are happy to be there!

13. Are kids welcome?

Yes! We are happy to have children join in. Children aged 12 & under are $12 (Adults are $16).

13. Are men welcome?

Yes! Men are welcome to join us for yoga on the beach. We usually have a few guys in almost every class!

14. What if I’m not flexible?

You don’t need to be flexible to practice yoga! While yoga can help you become more flexible, in your body and your mind, it is not essential to be successful. We practice yoga to help our bodies feel good, reduce pain, increase flexibility, and reap the many mental benefits yoga offers. You’ll be amazed at how much stretching your physical body can help your mental and emotional state, especially when you’re completely surrounded by nature.

15. What if I don’t have very good balance?

Yoga helps increase your balance! Balance is something we work on for at least a portion of every class. Balance can look different for each person. You will be given options to find the balance that will work best for your body to improve. As we age, it is essential to work on balance to stay healthy and prevent injuries from falls.

16. What are the age ranges of the students?

We have had students join us from the ages of 6 to 81!

17. Do you offer private yoga?

Yes! We offer private yoga classes for individuals and groups. For the summer, we offer private yoga on the beach outside of our normal business hours. To schedule a private for an individual or 2-3 people, please call or text Erica directly at 609-442-4266. To schedule a private for small groups, please fill out the form here.
